Michael Vinson

SVP of Analytics Strategy
Comscore

Michael Vinson, Ph.D., is passionate about finding new ways to analyze and transform enormous amounts of complex TV data into useful viewing insights for comScore clients.

As Senior Vice President, Operations Management, Michael is responsible for technical aspects of comScore’s television products, and manages a team of data scientists who work to develop the science, statistics and systems that make comScore’s TV products and services unmatched in granularity and stability.

“Now that viewers have hundreds or thousands of channels to choose from and can time-shift their viewing on multiple devices, there is no way to measure that behavior in a valid way using panels or samples,” Michael says. “Only comScore, with its big data approach, can comprehensively measure today’s viewing.”

With more than a decade’s worth of experience working as a physicist, Michael says his background in empirical physical science gave him the mathematical and statistical tools to do his groundbreaking work at comScore.

Most recently serving as Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Digital Insights and Analytics at Starcom MediaVest Group, Michael also previously worked as the Chief Research Scientist at erinMedia, where he was granted seven patents relating to mathematical methods for estimating demographics from privacy compliant digital set-top box data.

Michael holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Chicago and completed his postdoctoral work at Syracuse University in Physics, where he won a Fulbright Scholarship to teach and research computational physics at Yarmouk University in Jordan.

When Michael is not busy developing the research systems that power comScore’s insights, he spends his time at his home in Northern California with his wife and three children. A self-confessed, “serial hobbyist,” Michael can be found dabbling in aviation, scuba diving, guitar, reading, computer programming and robotics.
