John Penney

As Executive Vice President, Consumer Business Development and Partnerships, John Penney is responsible for identifying new business initiatives for the studio with an emphasis on accelerating the development and delivery of Fox’s intellectual property across content, distribution, new technology and consumer channels.  Penney also leads expansion efforts in international markets.

A seasoned executive with proven experience in global business development, technology and strategic partnering, Penney will further evolve Fox’s strategy by focusing on new business models and compelling consumer experiences that capitalize on the rapidly changing global entertainment and technology landscapes.

Previously, Penney served as Chief Strategy Officer for Starz and EVP, Global Business Development for Lionsgate, where he was responsible for building and evaluating business strategies and partnerships across the companies. He was also Chairman of the Board of STARZ Play Arabia, a successful start-up premium SVOD service he helped launch in the Middle East and North Africa.

An early and ongoing proponent of the digital transformation of the entertainment industry, Penney was with HBO for five years, where he served as Senior Vice President, Digital Initiatives, responsible for the strategic planning, delivery, and operational management of digital businesses.

In addition, Penney has also held senior executive positions with IMG, Scient, and Viacom. He started his career in global media and entertainment finance having spent nearly a decade as a banker and equity research analyst for Sanford C. Bernstein and The Chase Manhattan Bank.

Penney was elected to the Executive Board of the Consumer Technology Association’s (CTA)® in 2014, and serves as Chairman of the Associations’ Content and Entertainment Council, is a member of its Board of Industry Leaders (BIL) and a Trustee of the CTA Foundation. He is a Founding Member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Vision Council and is also an Executive Committee member of the Television Academy’s Interactive Media Peer Group.

Penney holds a B.A. in Social Psychology from Wesleyan University and a Master’s Degree in Public Policy & Administration, concentrating on Science & Technology, from Columbia University. Penney also is credentialed as a Project Management Professional (PMP)®.  He lives in LA with his wife and daughter.
